A Building’s Long History

VisitorCenterOriginal-9-2-25.jpg

The very first business in Tombstone was opened on this corner by J.B. Allen.

Yes. the same Allen that Tombstone’s main street is named after.

In 1879 the building was purchased by Phillip W. Smith who opened the Pioneer Store in it.

He also ran a branch of the Tucson-based Pima County Bank within the store.

When Cochise County was established the name changed to the Cochise County Bank, and the building became known as the Cochise County Bank Building.

The bank boasted a burglar-proof safe with a time lock.

A glimpse of that safe can be seen from the teller window in the visitor center.

But Wait, There's More...

Later it became Cochise Hardware & Trading. Then the Bunker Hill Mining Company.

From 1886 to 1917 it was the Wolcott Department Store and then it became the Tombstone Commercial Company.

Around 1945 it became a medical clinic and hospital and remained so until the middle 1960s.

Since then it has housed the Chamber of Commerce and now the Tombstone Visitor Center.

Despite all of this it is still known as the Cochise County Bank Building.

A Visitor Center Today

Inside, the tiny visitor center, when you think about it, still looks like an 1880s bank.

The counter where you can find a volunteer to answer your questions is a teller’s window.

Look to the right at the teller’s desk and the original inset safe can be seen.

Free maps of the Tombstone Historic District are available here and one wall is lined with brochures of activities and points of interest in Tombstone and Cochise County.

There is also a modern bank located here just as there was in the building's beginning,

An ATM sits inside the door in case you need to grab some cash.
